1st Impression: Beautiful natural landscapes but very poor and dirty

When we got to Port Louis the Jcrew and a few other friends from the boat decided to rent a bungalow for the three days we were there. Although I knew that there would be a lot of drinking and partying I agreed to go since it was Jane's Birthday. We rented a house in Flic en Flac (a real city) and we all headed out there about 4 hours after we docked. The dock area that we were in wasn't there for cruise ships and was a dock for loading and unloading so it didn't smell the best. (hopefully this will get us a little more prepared for India) We went to Flic en Flac that night but due to some extreme circumstances we ended up coming back the next morning. I'm not going to go into any details in this blog of what happened although I've heard that some of what happened is already circulating on the SAS message boards. Everyone in my group is safe and overall it wasn't that bad of an experience. It actually gives me a good story for when I get back but I don't want to add to the rumor mill of this SAS voyage so I don't plan on putting anything in this blog at least until I get back. Port Louis is actually on the other side of an inlet from where we docked so there were water taxi's for $1US to take over and back. There were two small malls close by which of course had the more expensive US stores but other than that had mostly touristy stuff which wasn't what I was looking for. That night after we got back Jeff, Joe, E, Nick, and I all went out to Pizza Hut for some American food. Almost everyone in our group was ready to have a break from the whole foreign country thing. It was amazing! It was so nice to have food that actually tastes like home. E and I then decided just to take it easy back on the ship and watch some movies while we organized our lives. On the last day in Mauritius I decided that it would be the best for me just to take a day to get my life back in order. I let myself sleep in and then I organized our cabin and took a really long shower. It was so nice. Then when everyone got back E and I went and ate on the other side in Port Louis and actually ran into tons of other SASers. After a quick bite and a little shopping we came back to the ship and almost everyone is studying and trying to finish stuff for midterms. Unfortunately I'm still behind in most of my classes so I have reading to do before I actually study. It's all my fault and in reality the classes aren't incredibly difficult its just that I choose to be involved in clubs and planning instead of doing homework. Either way I'm bound and determined to catch up and finally get into a routine! Overall I would say that Mauritius was a port that in general SAS just didn't prepare us for. They just kept telling us that it was like Hawaii but I thought it was comparable to Cancun. I don't necessarily see myself ever coming back to Mauritius but if I did I would stay at a resort in Grand Bay and my advice to any future SASers is to stay away from Flic en Flac. It was a good learning experience though and it definitely brought the Jcrew closer.
The really funny thing now on the ship is that Nikki and I are in a war of sorts with our steward. Not necessarily a good war. Basically he doesn't like us at all because I tend to be in our cabin at the exact opposite times as Nikki so apparently he can't clean when he wants to so he gets all mad and yells at us every time we come out of our cabin. Honestly I don't want him to even clean our cabin but Nikki does. It actually was nice at first to come back to a clean bed and room but now it's a hassle to try and not come back when he might be cleaning. The other day when we got back from flic en flac and shopping I had left him a note not to clean while we were in port and so I locked our cabin and had laid down to try and catch up on sleep and the next thing you know he was pounding on my door waking me up. This didn't just happen once but three times he came and pounded on my door. It was so annoying I was ready to hurt him(wouldn't normally be a big deal but we hadn't slept more than three hours the night before and it had been a really draining experience. I needed a power nap!) But all in all I think he's a good guy just really annoyed at having to work with a bunch of ungrateful college students. I wouldn't enjoy his job that's for sure.
Thanks to those of you who sent cards again. I'm pretty sure that most of them never made it but that's ok. It was a really random assortment of cards including several valentines day cards. The next port that is supposedly the best to sent packages and stuff to is Hong Kong.
