Our first ride went great. Lucy and i rode on a MULE! named Ruthie, and we were both a little skeptical. In fact, Lucy says - oooookay, but next time i want a 'horse.' Well, we spoke too soon. They tell me that mules are preferred by many horsemen and i can see why. They are smart, surefooted and a smooooth ride - which, since i am riding 2x a day for the foreseeable future, could be really helpful.

After the morning ride was lunch and after lunch Kelly and Julie got here - YAY!!!! Kelly said Julie was so exicited she was coming right out of her skin. When they turned off onto the mile-long road, which was not paved, Julie was like, 'Kelly, why are you going so slow!."

They got checked in and had about five minutes to spare before the afternoon ride. Grandma Lucy has decided to sit the rides out so her knees function for the 2nd half of this trip. So Lucy, Julie, Kelly and I all set off ... the ride was great. Lucy rode on a horse by herself and the wrangler, Brandy, said she did great. Julie was on Shadow who bites other horses, and Kelly was on Frito who likes to torment Shadow by pushing his nose as close to Shadow's butt as possible. Eventually the unevitable happened and Shadow swung around to fight! But our horsewomen did a great job and Julie jerked Shadow right back into control. I was behind all of this riding my Cadillac, Ruthie. (thats what the wranglers call her - i have not told them that i am a relatively  experieced horseback rider cause this mule thing is really great.) On this ride we got to climb up some hills (or mountains as the girls call them) and we could see the whole spread. Bandera is really beautiful.

After horses, we settled in and then swam - the pool and outside air was much warmer. We played a rousing game of Marco Polo and Colors with some of the kids that are here. There are tons of kids now - a good range to match our girls. Julie has made friends with a girl named Allie and told some ghost stories with a boy named Carter! He is a really sweet kid b/c before the rest of our crew got here, Carter was one of the kids to help Lucy do stuff. Lucy has been hanging with Evelyn and Cameron. So far the other families have been really great.

We had BBQ outside last night for dinner - corn, ribs, sausage and brisket. YUMMMMM.

This place is very different that i had imagined and than i had experienced at the Mayan. It reminds Kelly and I of the Landa Resort before the Schlitterbahn. I found out yesterday that this has been an operating dude ranch for 60 years and an operating ranch for 100+ years.

There was a story of a lady who has been coming for 60 years - and she has this album where she has pictures from all the years - from the time she was a little tot until she was in her 80's and i wish i could see the album - i mean what a lifetime of changes there must have been here.

Well - i am going to try my hand at uploading some pictures - let us know if you're reading this.
