After Milan maligning, author and companion in favor of change of scenery. Morning bright, full of promise. Friendly hotelier (with smile-inducing name Georgio Washington Rios) offers espresso and pastries. Delicious. Found cyber cafe in Brescia, promptly gave flash drive with pictures two viruses. Decide on nearby Lake Iseo, part of 5 lake system in Italian Alps. Others Como, Maggiore, Garda, and one more, forgotten. 35 min local train brings author to tourist-tainted but worthy resort town Iseo. Grandeur of mountains, lake spotted with sailboats, coastal towns, etc.

Ferry hourly to/from mainland to Monte Isola. Largest lake island in Italy, 3 sq km, 600 m mt. altitude. Rented bikes from cartoon-like Italian donna. Boasted, attempted non-existent English. Asked for prompting as routine. Couldn't understand difference between "much" and "many"--subtle grammar elusive. 1 hour to circle island via bicycle. Author's companion: "the most amazing thing i've ever done in my life."

Late afternoon train back to Brescia. Average dinner followed by first-rate dessert of "panna cotta" (lit. "cooked cream") and tiramisu. Street concert held in Roman Forum square. Brass quintet scheduled. Author and companion retired after brass renditions of West Side Story and John Williams soundtracks failed to move emotions. Spent evening on terrace on hotel roof, drank bottle of white wine on same while browsing Italian fashion magazines.

cream [drool]
that's easiest my best food memory from Italy: the cream they put on cake. that, and pasta with clam, tomatoes and mushrooms in Rome.
