Imagine a town with an over-the-top Gothic cathedral started in 1100 and something, streets and alleys with surprises around every corner and the whole thing ringed by a mediaeval wall.
We had that today in Siena, with sunshine and coffee added for good measure.
We walked from one end to the other to find a gate in the wall, established that it couldn't be climbed upon and walked all the way back along different streets. We found ourselves in the more suburban part of the inner city with hairdressers and delis rather than cafes and gelaterias. After lunch in a park, we found our way back to the aforementioned ceramics shop and I spent AGES choosing three plates to hang on my kitchen wall. Half of that time was spent in Italian lessons with the delightful Rosalba. Just couldn't find an excuse to buy the 884 euro platter though, despite it being a stunning work of art...
Then to top off the day, an afternoon cafe gelati sitting in the Piazza, another great dinner at the local and a stroll into town to see the floodlit buildings.
Imagine that!
