Was so enjoying that sleep-in when the phone rang at 9.30am asking whether I was going on the scheduled tour of Banff! How embarrassing...
Half a busload of train passengers looked me up and down as I stumbled on five minutes later, unshowered and dressed in what turned out to be totally inappropriate footwear for the morning. First stop was the Banff Gondola - a seven minute ride to the top of Sulphur Mountain which afforded spectacular views of Banff, the Bow River valley and the surrounding, snow-capped Rockies. Icy cold and icy snow on the viewing platform. With my sprained ankle history in mind, I retreated to the cafe for breakfast. We also visited the Cave and Basin Centre (overpowering smell of sulphur, large elk grazing outside,) the Bow River Falls and the streets of Banff itself.
Banff - think extended Mt. Hotham/Dinner Plain, minus gum trees, plus fir trees, alps, classy shops and buses of Japanese tourists. Very pretty. Even the Safeway store. Still no decent coffee though.
