We wake to find that we have docked in Koblenz as anticipated. Outside our window is not the scenic Rhine River or town scenes, but the window of another cruise boat. From the dining room, there is a second boat on the other side.

We are tethered three abreast just off the Rhine in the Mosel River. Another threesome sit behind us. Barges are coupled together across the river. Some are tied to solid mooring poles in the middle of the river.

We are paralysed!

With heavy upstream rains, all Rhine and Danube river traffic has been closed and no-one is going anywhere. The water is flowing rapidly and turbulently and has not yet peaked. You can read all about it here...

The 'Bridge of the Day' photo is not looking good. We are likely to be here for at least two days...

Today's walking tour of Koblenz continues as planned with another excellent guide. Every second sentence ends with a jolly chuckle. He has the feel of a German Santa Claus without the padded suit.

We are meant to sail after lunch for tonight's stop at Rüdesheim, but instead buses are organised for the 45 minute drive south to the tourist town. Along the way, we pass numerous hill-top castles, some abandoned and others restored into museums or exclusive hotels. We also pass the Loreley Rock and statue, which marks the narrowest and most treacherous part of the river.

The attraction listed for us in Rüdesheim is Siegfried's Mechanical Music Museum. It houses hundreds of mechanical musical instruments from the more familiar music boxes and pianolas with rolls to grand cabinets the width of a room that play numerous sounds along with decorative moving figurines.

Yet another guide leads us on yet another city walk before the return bus trip to Koblenz. It is frustrating trying to take photos from a fast-moving bus with spotty windows looking into the sun. Cruising past would have been so much nicer!

Lucky then that dinner is still unaffected...

Ahh! Koblenz- our first port of call. I'm hoping the river will have subsided by next Friday and that the sun dares to shine. At least you managed a bridge photo.
Wishing you smooth sailing and sunshine
