Sadly, my flight out of Melbourne is not overbooked and in need of kindly passengers to move up into business class. But it does grant me an empty space next to my 30A window seat.

So for around eight hours and 7400 km, I spread out and enjoy the apple juice, beef fillet and pork noodles, chocolate macadamias and a Weis bar, Anne Frank's diary on my iPad, some Scrabble, some Bradley Cooper and Mumford & Sons through some fine headphones - thanks Rohan!
Cathay's service is quietly attentive and an absence of squealing children completes the pleasant ride.

The salt pans of central Australia that had filled last September now show white fringes around their shores and the red earth has endless ridges that give it an appearance of being raked over with a palette knife.

We pull into Hong Kong's gleaming airport for a two and a half hour transit before boarding CX289's overnight flight to Frankfurt.

I have a Sydneysider for a neighbour this time, going home to visit his parents in Dresden. Supper is tasty but sleep is uppermost in my mind for this leg. I set myself up with soft music, blanket, pillow and wooly bedsocks and snooze intermittently through the 11 hours and 9100km. It seems adequate and I'm content to be officially woken when the cabin lights are switched on for breakfast - which can't come a moment sooner according to my stomach!

Glad to hear you've arrived safely on Eurpoean soil. Your sailing companion is airborne en route to Singapore then Amsterdam and, after all the stresses of the last week to distract her from pre-holiday euphoria, is starting to sound excited.
You guys have a great trip and keep the blog updated!
