It has been many weeks since first committing to this trip. I have become the unofficial travel agent for the week following the cruise, sorting train trips and booking hotels for five of us through Eastern Europe. A few websites have been old stalwarts...
www.seatguru.com - perfect for tracking down the best seats to choose in any plane
www.seat61.com - unbeatable railway information
www.booking.com - extensive hotel booking site with great sorting and functionality
www.bahn.com - the excellent German Railways website that covers ALL of Europe.
www.lonelyplanet.com - the Thorn Tree forum has an online community that can answer the most esoteric of travel-related questions! The wealth of information amongst that community never amazes. Dave from Bratislavia in particular has solved all my East Europe queries this time, apart from where to find shoes in Berlin!!!

I have bought a $5.00 bike helmet from 7-Eleven, knowing that Melbourne leads in the prevention of head injuries because of our helmet laws. I will be the ONLY person cycling in Amsterdam and along canal paths with 'MELBOURNE' emblazoned across my blue helmeted head - but I will be safe! And I have chanced on a gel-filled bike seat cover at Aldi to protect my 'other end'! The clothes as they are will do, so I am set!

And now departure day has arrived. Ian delivers me to the airport for my lunchtime flight.
Can I score an upgrade this time? Wherever you are in a plane, that next section forward always looks so much better...

...and what did the suitcase weigh?

Suitcase weighed in at 16.5kg (which was bad enough) but it was the bagful of carry-on food treats for Hilary that was the killer! At least the Tim Tams, dried apricots and Aussie tea were all well received! Sadly the mega-jar of Vegemite was confiscated at Tulla - they claimed it was a liquid!

Tell Hilary I want to see the Melbourne helmet photo too! Word of warning, helmets don't protect thumbs; it's an illusion of safety!
