Blue sky! We wake to sunshine and blue sky despite a forecast with a 50% chance of rain!

So the immediate decision is the Tower of London, keeping Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey for indoor days. The bus takes nearly an hour to reach Oxford Circus through grid-locked streets and the driver recommends swinging over to the tube. Grandma gets her first taste of the extensive passages and stairs of the underground.

There are many more people at the Tower today compared to six months ago, but today's yeoman of the guard giving the free guided tour is far more humorous. We don't climb any of the 33 towers on site - and they are not faulty... unless you were one of many who were imprisoned in them over the centuries.

The day culminates at the Crown Jewels collection, with the unimaginably STUNNING array of orbs, sceptres, crowns, gowns and gold diningware used for coronations from the 1600's onwards.

Then begins the slow climb back up to Tower station and home to Paddington - although I take a diversion to visit the Liberty shop in Regent Street. I resist all impulses...

The TV news tonight shows pictures of the worst floods in 30 years in the north of England and southern Scotland. A 30km traffic jam blocks the A1 and trains have been cancelled after over 2 1/2 inches of rain in some areas. We cross fingers and tell ourselves all will have subsided in a week's time...
