So this is a chance to sleep in, enjoy breakfast and do some unplanned sightseeing. I had hoped to sneak around the corner into Italy and revisit the Cinque Terre but the train trip is too long...
Our host, Gilles, recommends Eze instead as "the most beautiful town in all of France." Who are we to argue?
It is another mediæval village, this time perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Mediterranean. It will mean more climbing, but we catch two buses that deliver us to Eze village
We join the other tourists who have heard the same description of Eze and climb through the village to the lookout. Stunning indeed!
With time still available, it's the #83 bus now down to sea level and a short train ride to Monaco! What an exotic destination for a coffee, we think!
The sight that greets us upon exiting the station is not so grand, although in another way it is... Next weekend is the Monaco Grand Prix and like Melbourne, the streets are barricaded and overgrown with advertising, seating stands and fencing. We can see a palace on the clifftop and big boats in the harbour but can't even find our way to anywhere to buy a coffee!!!
We return to the station and head back to Nice. We have seen five Ferraris and a Lamborghini in the streets but no Mark Weber. Not even a slice of cake!
So risking another recommendation from Gilles, we head to a small local restaurant for dinner and strike a winner this time!
"11-eme" is a modern place with smart designer decorating touches and a degustation menu that Liz enjoys. I tackle a lamb shamb - Frenched of course! It was such an enjoyable meal for our last unhurried night that I include a link to it. (The place doesn't seem to have it's own page.)
Eating well in France?... Eze-y!
