We woke up this morning to pouring rain. However, we weren't about to let a little moisture ruin our day! We started off today in the Old Town & toured the Jewish quarter. Its a shame I don't know more about the Jewish faith because the Klausen synagogue & Ceremonial Halls were quite interesting. The most interesting part was the Old Jewish Cemetery, where the oldest preserved tombstone dates to 1439! I can't say for sure but there was about 12,000 graves that are visible & about 100,000 total burials at this site!

Apparently the Jewish community in Prague in slowly dying out - as the majority of people still practicing the faith are older. Its very hard to be a young Jewish person here as there is only 1 Kosher store in the whole city so it has a monopoly on the market & the prices are outrageous. Trying to live & practive a faith in one of the most photographed areas of the city would be hard, as would finding a Jewish husband/wife. So, many of the young people have moved away. 

The other highlight today was a walking food tour of Prauge. We met up with a local couple, Jan & Zuzi, and went to 4 different restaurants & cafes to try some Czech food & learn about the culture. They took us to see both slow cooking methods as well as typical Czech fast food.

 This is NOT the city for you if you're on a diet or if you're vegetarian/vegan! The dishes are very heavy, rich & filling. It is all about the meat here - the only veggies we've had are white spring asparagus that is in season right now, and of course, some cabbage. 

 The liquor, beer and wine is a definite must as well. The tradition of making wine was lost during the 40 years of communism when everthing was made in mass quantities for cheap prices. In the 90's if you went to a restaurant, you only had 2 choices for wine - white or red - grape variety was not an option. After communism was over - younger generations went to Italy, France & Spain to learn how to make good wine & brought the knowledge back. There is now good Czech wine being made but it is not exported as so little is produced. It will take another 20 years before production will be good enough to start exporting.
