First, I want to thank everyone who supported me throughout this last year: emails, phone calls, letters, even money. It was a year in which I felt incredibly isolated, and all these things helped.
I have been back in the states for a little over three months, now, and many, many people have helped me so much in that time. I want to attempt to name some of them, although I'm sure I'll miss others.
I want to give special thanks, now, to those who have been so generous since I've been back in the states. To Stephanie and Shahir: For opening their Chicago apartment to me many times, sharing themselves, bus passes, the refrigerator, razors (I was out), Max the scaredy-cat wonderdog, and Mama's Red Dessert Cafe. To my brother and his wife, Steve and Beth, and JR, Bailey, Rascal, and Gizmo: For opening their home to me as my home. Movies together, bridge games with Dad on the internet, Beth's generous dinners, Evelyn, cooking out on the back deck, phone calls to family, playing with cats and ferrets, and more. Philip and Vahid, for the trip to Debbie and Rick's, for the pick up at National and a surreal night at Caesar's Atlantic City (how bizarre to go from Honduras to Caesar's in less than a week - crazy in the head!), for your gambling and my watching! For the drive up, and golfing with the Barber men in Connecticut and Maine. To Debbie and Rick, Ann-Marie, Liz (Liz's man, Matt), Rachel (and the crazy fun kitten - Coda?), and Chewy: Thanks for taking me in, letting me hang out, the hike up Borestone Mountain, fun food, and grilling steaks, for the ride to Boston and the airport. To Philip's family: his wife Shari, and the kids, Joshua, Jacob, Maria, and Allison, for letting me camp with them, the movie about the bugs and oven baked s'mores! To Mom and Dad: For the time spent together, for love and support, for a National's night game and BBQ sandwiches. For the delightful summer cookout with Phil and Shari, the kids, and their guests from the Congo. And, oh, watching Liz in the Chicago Marathon - I died, she survived!
... and Friends
To Tony, Leigh, Emily, and Charlie: Thank you for opening your house to me, for Leigh's dinners, movies, the lessons in Scrabble (will I ever learn?), your generosity all along the way, for Emily's 1-year birthday party (I got to babysit one night!), for a room, for a car over Christmas (huge), job leads, chai tea, and your families. To Linda, Ron, and Armstrong: for sharing so much, for the room, making our own brand of cashew chicken and something else Chinese, for the want ads, walks with the hound - and chasing down rolls of toilet paper and anything else he can get his teeth into, fun dinners, and Halloween. To Julie, Nicole, Turner, Ripley, Jackie, and Lucy: For opening your home to me, for the walks, for job leads, Chinese food, playing with Thomas the Train, the beach album, doggie kisses like no others, and talks.
Special Thanks Due
And I need to give a special thanks to both my family and friends for supporting me financially. So many of you have been so generous, and I have no idea how I could possibly ever pay you back. Thank you.
And to many, many friends I haven't named. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
