We were pretty hungover this morning from all the drinks last night. For breakfast, we went to Cafe Du Monde (www.cafedumonde.com) for beignets and café au lait. It was hot and humid and we needed to hit the road so we just walked around a little near Jackson Square and took a few pictures. For lunch, we went to Cafe Pontalba for our last cajun/creole meal.
On our way out of the city, we drove through the Upper Ninth Ward, Lower Ninth Ward, and St. Bernard Parish. The devastation from Katrina was horrific. Houses were still knocked down with garbage laying all over the yards, street signs and trees were bent to the ground, cars and boats lay abandoned and ruined in the streets, street lights out, and barely any people around. Rescuers had marked each house with the date that it was searched and the number of bodies found inside. We drove through miles and miles of it before we started to feel sick to our stomachs and got back on Interstate 10.
From New Orleans, we drove through Mississippi and Alabama to Tallahassee.
