I think it's fair to say I came back from my 4 months of traveling (through South & Central America) a different person (physically that is). Gone was the crew cut & clean shaven look. Enter the curls & beard.
While the appearance may have changed, the lifestyle certainly didn't & notwithstanding the fact that we were working hard (yes, we do work hard), we were always out. Danger & I often thought we were the only finance people in O-Bar or Jet (the local night clubs) at 3am on a random Monday (the rest all being hospitality industry staff who had the luxury of getting up at 3pm & not 8am)
It's impossible to sum up 6 months of stories in 1 blog so I won't even try – we'll save that for the book (watch this space). Special mention must, however, be made of our regular Friday jaunt & my spiritual home – Aqua. It would always be packed on a Friday night & you'd know just about everyone in the bar. After a few drinks my legs would start twitching & I spent most evenings dancing like a Muppet on stage.
I also loved a spot of karaoke when I'd had a few & I know I butchered some Elvis numbers on occasion at Fidels on a Saturday night. Thankfully there was a group of us who always sang The Journey's greatest hit (Don't Stop Believing) so that always sounded slightly better (especially if Hot Rod was in town).
“I love that song. I love it even more when amateurs sing it”
The weekends were sometimes kicked off with a few quiet happy hour beers on the water at Guy Harveys (or Rackhams) or a few drinks at Nectar before we'd progress to Aqua. Occasionally, we'd be on a booze cruise (a.k.a the Jolly Roger - a pirate ship) to kick things off & those nights were often very hazy
After a busy week, Saturday morning was for sleeping & I was seldom out of bed before 12. Come to think of it, most Sunday mornings were pretty similar. Once in a while there'd be a brunch on a Sunday (all you can eat & bottomless champers for $50 - you guessed it, phenomenal) before we'd while away the rest of the weekend at the beach with a few beers in the ocean & then a few more at the beach bar "Royal Palms". At some point we discovered that Stingers, another bar, had a jacuzzi so we spent a few Sunday nights there too.
Occasionally, there'd be a boat trip & these too were always great fun. I recall having to head to work in a golf shirt after one boat trip ... I had every intention of putting on a load when I got home Sunday night but that wasn't too happen. Speaking of this boat trip, I remember sitting in Bridgette's car trying to start it for a good 5 mins before I turned to her & casually asked "What car do you drive again?". A Toyota she replies. It then struck me that we were in a Honda!
On the odd occasion we'd run up a bar bill of $500, & 40 odd shots, by 5pm on a Saturday (between 4 of us) while I also recall spending some time trying to explain the basics of cricket to an American
In late January, I was back on the road for my 1st business trip. The trip was to Seattle to see my (& the office's) biggest client & needless to say, the partner was adamant I "do something about my hair & beard". A visit to the local barber in Pike Street Market neatened both the developing fro (still there but tidier) & the beard & the meetings all went off well. While on the road, I headed to Raleigh, North Carolina, for an awesome weekend with a mate from my South American travels - the Schmuppet (a.k.a Meg).
I also visited a sister Island called the Brac, where I did some awesome diving, hit up Vegas with the boys for a guy's weekend (unfortunately there was no tiger in our bathroom) & went cruising to the Bahamas with Davis, Fienberg & Danger. I'm pretty confident our bar tab out paced any body else's & we became quite famous - I had even had my own groupies. Unfortunately, it wasn't as I'd dreamnt it but a group of 12 year old guys! Hope springs eternal.
I'll leave it at that as I'm sure this has been long enough. To end off, I just wanted to give a shout out to everyone I know in Cayman. I love the place & I miss you all. And Aqua!
PS - if you're still reading, just to let you know that you can find tons of pics on face book ... this is just a handful.
