Thursday, March 3, 2011

The Wildwaters Lodge is more than 1/2 hour north of Jinja, outside a small village along the River Nile.  As we head south toward Jinja, we pass the new hydroelectric power dam, Bujagali Falls Dam, intended to provide power to Uganda and help shore up the power deficiency that is crippling the nation.

Jinja town is known for its adventures on the Nile, but is also known as one of the most developed towns in Uganda, thanks to the businesses established and run by Asian Ugandans over the years.  While many left in the early 70s, a good number has returned to re-establish themselves.

For the benefit of those that have left and not returned, my friend Atul included, I have taken a number of videos as we took a driving tour through town.

While in Jinja town, we stayed at the 2 Friends Guesthouse, owned and managed by a man and his wife from Sweden. It's a beautiful establishment, with a sparkling swimming pool and poolside rooms.  The gardens are clean and lush.  The restaurant next door under the same ownership and management, is a popular hang-out for expats and locals alike.  The food is great, and includes a wood-fired pizza oven and a nice selection of Indian and American choices.

Friday, we took a walk to the park where the explorer that discovered the Nile dubbed "Source of the Nile".  A boat trip took us out on the Nile, south of the Own Falls Dam (just along the site of the prior Rippon Falls dam), and into Lake Vistoria for a cruise along the shorline

Today, Sunday, we head back to Kampala for a couple days and an appointment with a local coffee exporter.
