I have been here for 5 days now and it has been really nice. Everyday the weather has been in the mid 20s ( a whole lot better then snow!) It is only spring here so it is just going to get hotter and I cant wait!
Santiago is pretty much like any other metropolitan city. Lots of people, traffic and chaos... at any hour of the day! I am ready to head towards the ocean and lay on the beach! We have been visiting with all of Stefs relatives that are very excited to take us out. They are all super friendly and make you feel at home. We went to one of Stefanie's aunts restaurant for dinner. Its a popular Mexican restaurant that has received one of the top ratings (seven forks)... it was delicious! I have met a bunch of Stef's cousins and some of their friends. They have been taking us on tours of the city and trying to get me to speak some Spanish. Most of her relatives speak very little English if at all, so Stef has had to be my little translator.
I have been trying a lot of new food and drinks.... for the most part they have been very good. Their iced coffee here is black coffee with ice cream and is actually quite good! They also put green beans on some of their sandwich's ( a little unusual). Most meals consist of bread, cheese, Pop, they put mayo on everything same as avocado.. but it all tastes good! Everyone here is super friendly. Whenever you meet someone or are saying hello and goodbye you hug and kiss each other on the cheeks. Its really cute! Oh and you can pretty much buy alcohol at any supermarket (right between the fruits and veggies!) and it is super cheap. $12 for a 2 6! Crazy!!!
For the most part we have just been walking around the city. We went on a gondola to the top of this mountain/hill with a statue of the virgin Mary ... probably the most touristy thing to do but I enjoyed it. The gondola was a little sketchy but we made it to the top and back safely! We have gone to a couple of markets, a art museum, the Parliament building, the university.... even sat in on one of Stef's cousins classes where he had to write a test ( a little awkward) although they were all talking throughout the whole thing and using their cell phones to call others for answers.... a little different then what would happen in Canada. We also went to this water show thing and walked through this park. It runs along the roads and is what separates the directions of traffic. Tonight we are going to some party and tommorow we are getting taken to a disco. We were supposed to go to a disco last night but by 2:30 am we were exhausted and went home to bed instead. Here they normally dont even go out until 2 ish and the bars dont close until 5.
Tuesday we are leaving Santiago and heading up north... stopping at a bunch of places on our way to Peru. I am very excited!
Not too much else to say... I am having a good time... havent got into too much trouble!
I will send another update when I get to my next destination!Later!!
