Off to the Maldives!!!....or not...YIKES!

The Colombo airport is small so you need to wait until your flight is posted before you can actually go through to the check in counters...so we were waiting....and waiting...and waiting....

"DELAYED"...the board says delayed until 7:20pm. Originally suppose to leave at 6:30pm. Not too bad...only an hour. So we entertained ourselves, watching Donald Duck on the airport t.v.'s and waiting for our flight to pop up on the Check-In board. There it is!! Time to go...6:30pm! We grabbed our stuff and headed to the entrance...super excited to be heading to the Maldives!

"No...No...No" the security guard says as he looks at our ticket and shakes his head. "Already Gone...too late". WHAT???!!! You're kidding! How can it be gone??? It just popped up as being able to check in!! "No...closed. Too late". Now we're getting nervous! Did we misunderstand the board??? Was the English wrong? But they speak English here! The flight was suppose to leave at 6:30pm, but the board says delayed until 7:20pm.  What's going on?? Did it leave without us??

So a couple minutes pass and we're arguing with him that it's only time to check in...trying to explain that the flight was delayed. We're all looking at the board and he's still refusing us entry!! We actually thought we were doomed...when for some reason, he walked away from us! He quickly returned...and let us in!!! Relieved, we ran to the check in counter...thinking that we were late for our flight, but they would let us on anyway. We get up to the check in counter and the lady is looking through our passports...."Where is your visa for the Maldives?", she asks. WHAT??!! Really? We need a visa for the Maldives? I knew we had looked it up, but maybe we made a mistake and misunderstood?? Then she says, "Do Canadians need a visa for the Maldives?" I replied with a nervous...I hope not! haha. After some investigation, she found where it says we don't and checked us in! Finally...off to the Maldives! We weren't late for our flight by the way...the security guard was just confused I guess...lol. Our most expensive part of the holiday and twice we thought we weren't going to catch our flight!

It was dark when we landed, so we had no idea where we were. The people are remarkable here! Complete strangers helping us find our way to the hotel...since the hotel didn't show up to pick us up as planned. The airport is an island of it's own, so we caught the local ferry to the city island of Male, found a taxi, and finally got to our hotel. The morning couldn't come quick enough! So excited to see where we were!

The island is small and crowded...hardly any vegetation...mostly cement. We only spent the one day there before heading out to our resort. And of course...it was a Saturday! In every other country in the world, Saturday is the best day for shopping...but not in Male!! Everything is closed on Saturdays!! We walked around the island, window shopping...haha. At the other end of the island, there is a man made beach...awesome! They sectioned off a portion and made a small bay...completely safe for swimming. Gorgeous blue green water...so clean! We had lunch at a nice cafe on the water's edge and continued on our walk back around the island.

Surfing!! I've never seen real surfing before! It was great! There were body surfers and a couple real surfers catching the waves. We sat along the wave breaker to watch for awhile. What a spectacular place! Just as we were checking our map for our next move....WHOOSH!! What the heck??!! A wave came crashing in on us....SOAKED! We had sat there for a good half an hour without a single wave coming close enough to get us wet! The locals watching thought it was hilarious as we caught ourselves, stood up, and peeled open the paper map that we had been looking at...so much for that! hahaha. It was pretty funny...but now we were both soaked with coral pieces all up our legs and in our underwear!! It made for a long walk back to the hotel...lol.

We enjoyed dinner at the hotel coffee shop...on the roof! An open air roof top patio...looking out over the amazing contrast of colors in the ocean, watching the boats come and go...so relaxing. Can't wait to get to our resort!
