From Goa, our flight flew to Mumbai...running late again! So as soon as we arrived at the Mumbai airport, we had a personal "airport" van...just for us...that picked us up right off the steps of our plane and chartered us across the runway to our other flight! We didn't even need to go into the airport...haha! We arrived in Colombo at 4:30am...bright and early! Fortunately, the hotel was there to pick us up for the 2.5 hour drive to the resort. We slept most of the way, missing all of the countryside! DOH!

"Paradise Island" (the actual name of it...chartered over in a small boat, welcomed with a refreshing orange Tang drink, and led to our room...where we crashed until lunchtime! All inclusive...sweet! On went the swimsuits and off to lunch we went! WOW...what a surprise. The buffet was HUGE with such delicious food...too good! The beach is HUGE!...and clean! A far cry from India. Not sure if it is just the time of year or not, but the water is really rough...not too great for swimming...but the beach is fantastic. And nearly deserted! If you want a private sunset walk, you can have it!

All inclusive...which includes local liquor...unless of course, it's during Buddha week....which was the week we were there!! The price wasn't reduced...but they couldn't serve alcohol for 2 days...haha. It's actually a four day holiday and alcohol can't be served during the holiday on the whole island of Sri Lanka...but the resort only stopped serving it for 2 days. So we were stuck with water or Orange Tang drink...haha. Which wasn't really an issue for us...lol.

We enjoyed Vesak (Buddha day) at the resort. There were lanterns hung and lit everywhere, and small coconut dishes filled with wicks and kerosene placed all along the pathways to symbolize Buddha. What a sight! The lights reflecting off the ocean water, burning throughout the evening. Beautiful.

A day trip to town to see if we could catch some festivities sounded like a good idea... We crossed the river and hopped in a taxi, which drove us a couple hundred meters into town...lol. We could have walked. Town...was...interesting. Again, another country, a different way of life. I think the bright yellow "all inclusive" resort bracelets that we were wearing may have given us away as tourists....well, that and us in general...haha. The locals flocked to us...trying to sell us things, wanted to bring us to spice stores or souvenir shops. One tuk tuk driver started walking with us, wanting us to go into a bunch of stores. He walked for over a kilometer with us! We couldn't lose him. He couldn't get a tuk tuk fare, since it's the off season, so he decided to walk with us instead...and try to claim the commission on anything we bought...by saying he brought us there! hahaha. It was so funny. He was a nice enough guy...but frustrating to have tagging along. There wasn't anything special going on that we could see and were quickly tired of the Sri Lankan sales tactics...so back to the beach we went!

There wasn't much for wildlife at the resort...unless you count the hundreds of squirrels, which would come right up to your plate and try to steal your food! They won a couple of times with me...lol. We also made a friend..."we" called him our friend...he might have thought differently. We met him one morning as we walked out of our room...and he took off running directly across our path!....all two and a half feet of him!! A big water monitor lizard! He was cute...so we played with him for awhile and watched him hunt. He came back a couple of times to visit us.

We were able to catch some traditional Sri Lankan dances...crazy!! I've seen traditional dances from 15 different countries...and none were as wacky and interesting as Sri Lanka! They had fire dancers, spun insane circles, wore crazy laughing masks, and had beautiful basket girl dancers. It was spectacular! The only country where we've actually seen a multitude of men wearing sarongs!

The plan was to spend two weeks in Sri Lanka...one at the beach, and one traveling around. That quickly changed when we realized how close we were to the Maldives!...the place you see on all the pictures, but is always too expensive to go to! Sorry Sri Lanka...we'll need to come back another time! There is so much to see here...

It's always difficult to leave an all inclusive, delicious buffet, excellent beach, and friendly people resort...but we are ready to move on. Staying awake on the 2.5 hour drive to the airport, we saw a few temples, many muslims heading to prayers, and observed the beautiful countryside. Now we're off to Paradise...our honeymoon week...in the MALDIVES!!! Yippee!
