Typhoon Fanapi! What an experience! We lucked out in the North.....only lost power and water pressure for a day and a half. The south of the island was hit hard and many homes were flooded! Our area saw a lot of damage, crops distroyed, signs and damage to buildings....light posts bent in half and snapped....no one was serverly injured so that was a bonus. All the trees were torn apart....our banana trees were destroyed, although the bananas remained attached! The 150 year old lychee tree had some damage, but survived. The winds were so strong that our bed was shaking...in a solid concrete house!!| Jay and I took a walk after the storm to see the damage, there was debris all over the roads, a power box had toppled over onto a scooter, signs destroyed, and we saw a closed 7-11 store! haha...we thought 7-11's never close!...that's what the locks on the doors are for...when the power goes out!

The day after the typhoon left us, there was an earthquake....4.9 on the richter scale! It was Jay's first, so it was exciting! There was another one today, just off of Taiwan (5.1mag). We were sitting outside doing our homework when the ground started rolling...it is quite an odd feeling!

The typhoon caused us to have a day off from class, since the school had no power and couldn't open the doors...haha...unfortunately for us, they reschedule missed "typhoon day" classes....so we were suppose to have class on the National Holiday day, which we had already made plans for, so we just missed the class instead...yipee! So... on our Typhoon Day, we went to Cishingtan...a coastal area directly across from the air force base. There is a bike path that goes for about 33km along the coast here....it is rather quite nice...if you like to ride bikes! However, the typhoon was so intense at the coast, that it carried boulders the size of car tires up approximately 300ft from the ocean edge!! The entire bike path in one section was covered in rocks and boulders! It will take awhile for the clean up to be complete!

The Moon Festival was on Septemeber 22 (a Wednesday) and is a national holiday here....the Chinese celebrate it with bbqs and friends and family. Jay and I celebrated by taking a trip out to Liyu Lake. It's 19km out of Hualien City...so we hoped on our scooters, took our bathing suits, and headed to the lake! On the way, we had to make an emergency stop (something didn't agree with Jay's stomach)....and Jay got the FULL experience of the Asian squatter toilets! ...lol... and I got to enjoy the look of panic on his face...lol.

Once we made it to Liyu lake, it didn't take long for us to realize that you cannot swim in it. It is at the bottom of a valley in the middle of the mountains....incredibly beautiful! We rented a fish shaped pedal boat for an hour and hung out on the lake....met a large fuzzy spider friend and came face to face with a shiny flying bird sized insect....lol. It was quiet at the lake because of the holiday, and it was nice to get away. We took a detour back....to see where the road through the mountains would take us...luckily it ended up taking us back in the end...haha. On the way, we came to a bicycle path that we wanted to check out....looked really nice nestled in the mountains. We went around a corner...and uh oh....lol...the road turned into a river! Literally, the river cut through the road and had lifted the pavement away!! We left our scooters and walked acoss the river (about knee deep) to see what was on the other side! It was so gorgeous in the mountains!

We continued on the same road, found another neat river area where tons of friends were gathering for bbqs under overpasses...and swimming in the river! It was a great atmosphere. Did I tell you how hot it was on this day???...it was definately over 35 degrees Celcius! So hot!!! We realized that night....Jay had forgot to put suntan lotion on his thighs!! His thighs were lobster red!!!...I guess you have to learn somehow...lol...it's like the dogs who jump off the moving scooters!...they'll only do it once...then they quickly learn!! haha.

We returned home...expecting to have a nice evening nap.....but were welcomed home to a large bbq that our landlord was having! They invited us to come, fed us awesome food and drinks....talked to us in brief English....taught us about the poisonous centipedes that live under the porch and grow to be about 6-8 inches long!!!....showed us the traditional Chinese instruments (as two of them teach traditional music)...found out our landlord teaches pottery....they took us for a drive to show us the secret swimming hole in the mountain river (about 5 minutes from home)...it was fantastic!!! They told us that when we have children, we will have to bring them here to meet them...lol. They are so nice and welcoming and the children even call us Aunty and Uncle! haha. Boston is 3 and Joyce is 7...and they are the sweetest kids ever. Boston speaks really clear English and loves Jay....his favorite game is telling Jay what to draw, using a rock, and then telling Jay if he drew it correctly or not! haha...so cute. Everytime we see him now, he runs to the rocks and picks one up...in hopes that Jay will play the drawing game with him...lol.

So now we have a secret swimming hole...which is indescribably amazing....in the mountains, the water is so clean....so relaxing!...even though the sign, with pictures, say no swimming....
