Whereas Perth is inland a bit, Freo - or Fremantle - is right on the coast. This is the main shipping point for Western Australia and, proudly, home to Australia II, the boat that won the America's Cup in '84. They are justifibily proud as that was the first time anybody had beaten the Americans in their sailing competition since it was started in the 1800s.

Freo is pretty laid back and I ended up staying here a few nights. The Fremantle Markets are supposed to be famous and a bit interesting...fruit stalls, giftwares and restaurants in a typical market setting except, after my experiences in India, something was missing. Nobody was yelling, no aggressive selling tactics to get your attention...it was all rather calm and orderly.  and boring.

I did end up renting a scooter for a little over $20 a day.  It was good to get around town and I used it to get down to Rockingham, to check out Penguin Island.  I also planned to use it to head up north to see some of the Australian Outback.  Imagine if Crocodile Dundee had a scooter - that would have made his movies 10x better.  or not.

The Fremantle Maritime Museum is rather new and impressive...built over-top an old submarine base that was one of the busiest, after Pearl Harbor, during WWII. The centerpiece of which is Australia II, the boat that beat the yanks in the America's Cup in 1984. The boat is bloody huge.

Freo was nice but like the saying goes - have scooter, will travel.  I'm not sure if thats the exact quote. Regardless, the outback is only a couple hundred kilometers north.
