In about two hours I'll be heading south again to Malaysia. I booked my overnight sleeper ticket at the main railway station yesterday. As expected I was hounded by touts from the entrance to the station all the way to the ticket booth. They are very convincing at pretending to be railway officials; complete with ID badges, uniforms and their own tourist information desks. They actually looked more official than the real staff! The cost of my 2nd class air conditioned sleeper (upper bunk) is 1120B, which is less than half the cost of a flight and a third more than a horrendously uncomfortable bus marathon.

The last three days in Bangkok have been overwhelmed by celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the King of Thailand's accession to the throne. The Thai people love their king and nearly everyone is sporting the bright yellow "I love the King" t-shirts and tops. The streets of Bangkok are lined with vendors selling all sorts of royal memorabilia. Somehow I couldn't imagine the same enthusiasm in the UK in this day and age.
