On arrival in Hanoi our bus promptly dropped us off just outside the old French quarter of the city. This is just inconvenient enough to warrant having to take a taxi into the district of the old city where all the guesthouses are located. Of course the ploy here is to ensure we are carted off to the guesthouses of their choice. They being the touts hanging around the bus as our luggage was being unloaded.

As both Shawn and I were thinking of heading to Sapa this evening it was just a case of trying to find transport as soon as possible. Unfortunately the one daily bus had already left by the time we arrived (7am) so we were left with the option of hanging around Hanoi for the day and catching the night train instead.

I thought I'd take advantage of the free ride into the old city and piled into a taxi organised by the lead tout to get carted off to some random hotel. Mid route the taxi got hijacked by another tout on the back of a motobike who instead lead the taxi to a rival hotel. None of this made the least bit of difference to us as we weren't planning on staying the night in Hanoi.

We headed out in search of a booking office where we could arrange transport for Sapa and bumped into Paul (an Irish lad we met in Sihanoukville and Nha Trang). He was on his way back to his hotel and suggested we accompany him as the staff there would probably be able to sort out our transport.
