When you hear people talk about their visit to the Blue Mountains they are usually talking about their drive up to Echo Point lookout at Katoomba, which overlooks the Three Sisters. Over the years this small town has developed a huge tourist infrastructure around people wanting to see the Three Sisters. This includes an impressive tourist centre, cable car, scenic railway and roller coaster that doesn't work.

Some locals say the Aboriginal dream-time legend associated with how the site came into being (three sisters of the Katoomba tribe that were turned to stone by their tribe's witchdoctor) is actually a modern day fabrication for the benefit of tourists.

Before Katoomba and the Three Sisters became the mandatory tourist stop in the Blue Mountains, the small town of Blackheath benefited from visits to a lookout known as Gavottes Leap. By comparison, this tourist site is a lot less developed but the natural beauty is comparable if not better. Have a look and decide for yourself.
