The day started with a visit to the Otara market a few miles south of central Auckland. It reminded me of the Bull Ring market days back home in Birmingham. Having stocked up on fruit and vegetables for the week (and trying to get musical notes out of several large shells at a stall) we dropped off our shopping and set off for the coast to coast walk across Auckland.
The Auckland Isthmus is New Zealand's narrowest neck of land, about nine kilometers wide. The walkway takes you over two of the cities popular volcanoes: Maungawhau (Mount Eden) and Maungakiekie (One Tree Hill).
I had done this walkway last year, but seeing as it was such a nice day I was quite keen to do the 16km hike again. Unfortunately we started the walk quite late in the day. By the time we had got to Mount Eden we had to cut it short in order to get back to Mission Bay for dinner at Robert's house.
