Well, I missed a post one day and then it grew to two, then three....  I tried to remember each day, but I couldn't.

Some highlights...

We went to a medieval market.  It was pretty crowded since it was set up on narrow streets in a village.  I did get to try Kartoffelpuffer there. It's a potato pancake fried in oil. Mmmm.

I also got to hike around in Altenberg. There were remains of a mining camp here from the 1200s.

On x, we set out for the German Fairy-tale Road. It's an unofficial list of places that the Brothers Grimm either lived/worked or provided inspiration for their stories. The whole road is about 600 kilometers (373 miles) long.  My daughter very much wanted to see this but doing the whole thing was impossible in the time we had left so we picked a couple of things that we could manage to see in a day.

Our first stop was and two-and-a-half drive to Kassel and the Brothers Grimm Museum. Unfortunately, when we got there, the museum was closed for renovations. Not wanting to make the trip to Kassel a total waste, we visited Wilhelmshöhe. It's a great park and wooded area with castles, fountains, and beautiful views. We hiked around there for a couple of hours and took some great pictures. (Coming soon!)

Time to get back on the road, so we went back to the town to get something to eat and plan our next stop, Castle Steinau. We checked with the tourist office to determine the hours. Unfortunately, we spent more time in the woods than we thought and now there was no way to drive to the castle in time. To make matters worse, it was clear that by the time we would get to the third planned stop, it would be dark.

I felt like a big loser for not planning this better and I vowed to do better next time.

We also said goodbye to Julia and her family, our wonderful hosts for the past several days. We had a great time with them and it was very sad to part ways. We look forward to the time we can visit again.
