Where I stayed
kampot guesthouse
we had a nice leisurely breakfast before catching a minibus from our guesthouse for the fairly short journey to kampot...
the company we booked with advertises..
no crazy driving...
only western music..
only 1 person per seat....
we have met a couple who were in a 12 seater minibus..with 27 people and 4 ducks in it!!!
we got in..so far so good...we had a total of 11 people for this trip...kate and i sat at the back and got chatting to a irish guy who had travelled through latin america..so we were swapping war stories..
the guy was driving pretty quickly but i wasnt to concerned...UNTIL.......... i looked in the rea view mirror..so i was looking at the drivers face....the guy was asleep!!!
i asked kate..are you seeing what im seeing..is he really nodding off? and he was!!!
the co-pilot was a young lad who couldnt drive but spoke better english...so we made him tell the guy to stop and take a break..(have a kit kat) well have a bloody red bull actually!!!
so the yound copilot thought it would make things better if he told us why the guy was tired.." HES BEEN A WEDDING FOR 3 DAYS!!"" so basically the driver had been on a 3 day bender !!!
but we got there about 20 mins later and the red bull was still working..so everyone was happy in the end....we got a guesthouse..basic but fine for a few days...and we set off to explore...downtown kampot..
when i say downtown....the place can be walked around in about 1 hr..but it was lovley to walk down by the riverside..where? down by the riverside....to watch life go by..this place is famous for pepper and crabs..so good seafood was available all round..plus it has a touch of the french colonial buildings..but they are in a sorry state...
we are staying just round the corner from the local prison....anyone who has watched prison break series 3..sona..youll know what i mean..if not then bankok hilton meets midnight express.
i really thought it was abandoned due to the terrible state of the walls and outbuildings..but when i saw a guard up in the watch tower and heard lots of voices from inside i realised it was still operational...you really wouldnt want to be inside there!!!!
even in the smallest places you can get some great food...we found a lovely place for lunch a dinner..called rikitikitavi..easy for you to say!!
and a nice place for breakfast...called sisters...its run by a very nice lady who herself was an orphan..she and her husband run an orphanage and profits from the cafe go
