Michigan City is pretty much a summer tourist area on the Indiana shores of Lake Michigan. Another of its claims to fame is that it is kind of close to Chicago, so there is predictably quite a few hotels and fast food places right along the interstate. We stayed there for the Notre Dame game because it was about 45 minutes from South Bend, and the hotel cost 1/2 to 1/3 of what the hotels were going for in South Bend on game weekend.

While doing research on beers in Indiana, I found Shoreline Brewing in Michigan City! It seemed like it would be a good place to go for dinner. The brewpub was in a very touristy part of Michigan City well off of the interstate and close to the lake. The area seemed a bit abandoned since the tourist season in northern Indiana is pretty much over by the end of September, but the brewpub was still pretty busy. It is also conveniently located a block from the Amtrak station.

We were seated in what seemed like the kid's section. There was a much more lively bar-like section on the other side of the glass. I felt a bit like we were in a church where they have the walled off room to keep the crying kids from bothering everybody else...except they served beer and had baseball showing on flat panel TVs. We ended up getting the sampler platter for a good variety. The beers here were pretty decent, some more-so than others. The best beer, I felt, was the Beltaine Scottish Ale. The Singing Sands Oatmeal Stout was pretty good, too.

Overall, this was a pretty good place to get dinner and have a few beers. I would definitely recommend going if you find yourself in Michigan City. I wouldn't go out of my way to go to Michigan City to find this brewpub, though.
