Bangkok is like the movie Blade Runner with Harrison Ford, where it's the future and everything in the city is above you. I wonder if they got the idea for the movie set from here.

This is a HUGE city.  My host gave me directions to her place from the airport, took the train and then what was supposed to be a short taxi turned into an hour searching for her apartment building.

After I arrived we went out to eat to meet up with my friend Tony- a guy I actually hosted in Atlanta way back when. We still exchange emails and he happened to be in Bangkok!  It was great to catch up and so random we were in Bangkok at the same time.

The next day my host, her name is Nong which is short for some really long Thai name, took us on a river boat to eat at a restaurant by the river.  A common item to order in Thailand it seems is chicken feet. Boiled chicken feet. I had to taste it but I couldn't get over the fact it was a foot so only ate a little. haha

Then the next day my host and another couchsurfer named Marek from Poland, who is also staying at Nong's, went out for a bite to eat for lunch at a local place near her apartment. There are tons of places to eat in Bangkok- from street venders to little places with maybe only 1 or two tables. The menu was on the wall at this particular place was entirely in Thai and it looked pretty cool- most little street vendors do not even have a menu though. But the food was some of the best I have had yet, probably because Nong ordered everything for us.

That evening I went to stay with my other host Mandy. Me and Nong and Marek went to drop my stuff off before we headed to a Bangkok Couchsurfing meet up at a place called Coco Walk with a bunch of little bars and restaurants.  It's basically a meeting for everyone in the community who is involved in couchsurfing- hosting somebody or traveling from some far off land- all are welcome. The restaurant had a large outdoor area with lots of chairs- good thing because there were like 50 people from all over the world. It was pretty cool. Bangkok has a very large and involved couchsurfing community. There are a lot of people who travel here so it makes sense. And we got to ride in a tuk tuk-  its three wheeled motorcycle with a bench in the back for passengers- kind of like a motorized rickshaw. They kind of look like little VW vans because of the rounded rectangular roofs on them. We zipped through traffic with all of us piled in. Good times for sure.

Nong and Mandy were fantastic hosts. They showed us around the city and we had a great time. But Marek was heading to the islands in the south and asked me to join. So I had to cut my time in Bangkok short. The next day me and Marek went searching for the best way to get to there- Koh Samui and Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. After attempting to book the trip for that night we decided to go the next day instead.  There are just a bunch of these travel agency shops around Khao San Road- the famous street from the movie The Beach where Leonardo Dicaprio drinks snake blood.  Well, I didn't drink snake blood but we did eat some fried grub from this stand that was selling things to eat like fried scorpion, grasshopper, ants, etc.  It was wild but it tasted pretty normal to tell you the truth. It was up there on the weird shit I have eaten.  Anyways, we did book an all night bus and boat transfer ticket to Koh Phangan, an island off the thin southern peninsula that hangs off of Thailand.

As always the rest of the pictures from Bangkok are below.

Next stop the island of Phangan!

Wah! (Wow in Chinese). Looks like you're having fun! Now, I'm even more eager than ever to hit the road again. I want Rick to hurry up and retire so he can go with me. I need to show him these pictures. I think he'd like SE Asia a lot more than China because it's not as polluted. I see you make a photorecord of every kind of beer you drink. You come from good stock! Party on! Hugs!

Thrilled to see you are enjoying Coke abroad.
