Gee whiz! What an unbelievable and unforgettable place!
We arrived at our fantastic hotel to find it was only 10 minutes ride from the ancient temples we'd come to see. So, we booked our very own tuk tuk (a little cart pulled by a moped) and guide and set off to explore...
Our first day was incredible, we visited Angkor Thom first and the Bayon temple decorated with hundreds of smiling Buddha faces then (after a lovely lunch and a swim in the hotel pool) we headed for Angkor Wat. The first view of Angkor Wat is breathtaking, it is incredibly well preserved and we were mainly free to explore the huge site on our own. The climb to the main tower was extremely steep and it looked like a helicopter might be needed to take Ange up the final 5 steps (she was awfy scared!) - well worth it though!
The next day we got our tuk tuk bright and early again for more of the same, the highlight of our day was Ta Prohm, a temple which was relatively recently discovered and has massive tree roots intertwined with the walls and doors of the temple itself... a truly amazing sight. As our guide mentioned at least 5000 times, this was the setting for Tomb Raider and Angelina Jolie's tree (we think he loved her!)
On the way back to the hotel we stopped to play with a group of monkeys frolicking by a stream, we had a great time feeding them bananas but think we might struggle to get them through customs... boo.
