We used today to orient ourselves to the Austin area. In the morning we drove to the Domain shopping complex nearby. The upscale shops, Macy's Department store, Apple and Microsoft stores provided several hours of interesting browsing. The shopping area is new and very beautiful with its tree lined street. We also drove briefly into the IBM complex nearby.

The northern suburbs of Austin are currently a hive of activity with plenty of apartment construction. There is plenty of room for growth and the road and public systems are in place to cater for this. We headed into the downtown city area of Austin via the light rail system. We left the car at the Kramer station and with a $1.00 fare each, travelled the 25 minute journey.

The city is easy to navigate with grid streets numbered from the river at 1st street. The light rail comes into the city at 4th street outside the Convention Centre. We walked up to 11th street where the Capital Building is situated. The building has a beautiful central dome with spiral staircases to ascend the three available levels. Portraits of the state governors and house speakers line the walls. Today a student parliament was in session in the Senate Chamber. We stayed for lunch in the building which was good value and included one of the best coffees we have had since arriving in the United States.

After lunch we continued exploring the downtown area and headed to the area where Formula One entertainment and specialized merchandise will be situated over the weekend.
