The travel brochures describe St Augustine as ‘both quaint and strange, in harmony with it’s romantic history. It is as if some little old Spanish town, with its fort and gateway, and Moorish bell towers, had broken loose floated over here and got stranded on a sand bank’. This very aptly describes the essence of the nations oldest city.

We are staying on Anastasia Island in the Anastasia State Park. It seems a world away from St Augustine with its lush greenery and nearby beach but is only five miles to travel over the Bridge of Lions into St Augustine.

This morning we drove the RV to a designated car park for the day so we could travel on the Old Town Trolley around the historic sights of interest. As part of our tour we had tickets to the Old Saint John’s County Jail (built in 1891 by the same people who built Alcatraz), the old store and the history museum. Each of these tours was wonderful with actors in costume relating fascinating stories of early life in St Augustine.

One of the trolley stops was the St George Street Pedestrian Mall. This was filled with interesting shopping, food and museums. We both enjoyed freshly made ice cream in waffle cones. While Jan browsed the shops, Allan took the opportunity to head to various historic sights to take photographs.

Late afternoon we headed north of Saint Augustine to it's Premier Outlet complex. This covers both sides of the major road into the city and consists of hundreds of factory outlet and specialty stores. There were some great bargains to be had and Jan picked up a beautiful bag at Coach New York at its factory outlet. These factory outlet complexes are a real temptation but we keep hearing about the Black Friday sale which takes place in the US just after Thanksgiving.  There will be huge discounts on items at that time so we hope to wait and do our major shopping then in San Francisco before we fly back to Australia
