Tuesday, August 13, 2013

This morning we arrived into Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island. Charlottetown is the capital and birthplace of Confederation. The city on the island is a busy port with both commercial and tourist centre, retains an old fashioned air.
Prince Edward Island Canada’s smallest province is known as the Garden of the Gulf. It has more than 3/4 of the land under cultivation. The superb beaches of the north shore boast 22 degree water temperatures in summer and is a popular holiday destination.
Anne of Green Gables.Green Gables house is a neat wood frame farmhouse with green shutters and roof. The writer Lucy Maud Montgomery spent many happy hours here as a child and used the house as a setting for her novel. The special places she discovered and named such as the Haunted Wood and Lover’s Lane still exist at Green Gables. The other end of the Trans-Canada highway is the Confederation Bridge. This marvel of engineering opened in 1997 and is the longest in the world (8 Miles) crossing ice-covered waters and spans the Northumberland Strait connecting Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. We sailed under the bridge at 4:00 am so we did not get to see it. What we did see was lots of lighthouses. Many of Canada’s colonial or first generation lighthouses (built before 1873) are octagon shaped and built of wood. Second Generation lighthouses tended to be square and tapered.
