Jericoacoara is remote. By remote I mean that the only ways of getting here are on horse back, or by a one hour 4x4 drive along the beach. It is surprising that given this so many people seem to manage to make it here to admire the stunning sand dunes which provide the seclution from the outside world, to participate in all sorts of outdoors and water sports, but mostly to drink caipirinias and dance on the sand until dawn! The town is little more than five streets, none of which are paved, making shoes an unnecessary hinderance for anything other than going to the toilets (which, like most in Brazil, ming). The stunning beach is framed on one side by the enormous Por do Sol dune and everynight about 5.30 almost the entire population of the town treks up to the top to watch the sunset - a walk which is well worth the effort.

I came here to meet up with my friend Daniela, but before disembarking the bus I had already found three English guys (including a fellow medical student hard at work on his elective) and an American. With the addition of an Irishman, a German, a Belgian, a Dutchman, a Dane, two Brazilians and all sorts of other along the way we had the basis of two days of non-stop partying and great banter. And when I say non-stop, I would like to say I have stumbled home at dawn for the last two days, but in fact it has been more like mid-morning. In fact I think i have only had about six hours sleep since I have been here, a point emphasised by watching sunset, sunrise, and then sunset again from the same point without seeing my bed in between. Thank god I'm leaving because I don't think this poor old almost-twenty-four-year-old body could take much more!

The first day we took a buggy ride to a lagoon to admire the incredible landscape and, if you are me, fall asleep and burn to a crisp. Since then the days have mostly been spent recoverng from the nights with more beer and swimming at the beach, or lazily swinging in a a hammock, bliss.

Now don't get me wrong, I will never get bored of palm trees and endless stretches of deserted beach, but after three weeks of salty hair and sandy feet I'm ready for something completely different. So I'm off up the Amazon for a week of roughing it, apparently I am only allowed to bring one small backpack of stuff and we make our own cutlerly to eat with! Wish me luck dodging the tarantulas! Beijos xxxx
