Monday, September 19th

We headed to the Boyden Valley Winery. This was a neat little winery that was in a fourth generation family barn renovated into a winery.  First we did our tasting, and the girl supplying us, was really nice.  Turns out her and her boyfriend did a trip similar to us this year as well for 4.5 months.  So we had lots to talk about.  It was interesting to compare our thoughts on places and that certain places (Jackson, WY) were both on the tops of our lists of favorite towns.  She was kind enough to give us her contact info here in VT.  It's great to make contacts out here on the road.  After our tasting we did a tour of the facility.  Gus (the dog) followed us on the whole tour, it was a neat little place.  Not too big, but had quite a lot of vats.  Apparently since we are in the north, they are known for their Ice Wines.  I’ve heard of Ice Wine before but didn’t know it was called that because the grapes aren’t picked until after it freezes and they dehydrate by freezing on the vine.  This causes there to be a higher sugar content as well as alcohol content because of the dehydration.  But we got to see the whole set up from the vats, to the de-stemmer to the cleaning/filling/corking/labeling machine.  We’ve been on other tours so we already had the idea of how it worked, but it was cool to see how different wineries operate.
