Tuesday, August 2nd

Today was supposed to be Jen, Jared and Liz's day of fun in Philadelphia, but Liz ended up having to go to work. Jared and I decided that we would still head in to Philly to be tourists.  We figured that we lived in Philly forever, but we never really did much of the tourist stuff. We got tickets to Independence Hall for 2pm and walked around checking out all the stuff that is in that area before heading in to Independence Hall. We have both been in to see the Liberty Bell before, but I don’t remember ever going in to Independence Hall so that is why we picked to go in there.  It was pretty cool to be inside the building, but our guide was a little hard to follow. He kept jumping around from topic to topic so I know I ended up tuning him out a bunch and just looking around.  Neither one of us could really catch what point he was trying to make at any time. It was still worth it to go in and see a bit of history. After we finished up on that tour we headed in to Congress Hall to see where the original House of Representatives and Senate met.

When we finished up around Independence Hall we headed on a little walking tour of our own. We were headed for Carpenter’s Hall when we heard some drums beating. We decided to go check out where the drums were coming from and there was a little skit going on.  It was some people dressed up as members of the Colonial Army with their new recruits (some tourist children).  We stood and watched that for a little bit and then headed up to Franklin Court to see the outline of Benjamin Franklin’s house.  It was pretty heat to stand in the passageway from Franklin Court out to Market Street, which is the passageway that Benjamin Franklin had to take every day to go to and from his house.

When we finished up there we walked down Market St. and stopped to get some ice cream before walking up north to head for Elfreth’s Alley.  We have been down here before so we just took some quick pictures and then headed over to Yards Brewing Company to have some beers and wait for Liz.  Jared’s favorite beer at Yards was the Cape Hope IPA, which is a seasonal beer. I really liked the Bourbon Aged Love Stout. We met a couple from Baltimore and talked some football with them for a while. Then Jared and I decided to play shuffleboard.  I won of course.

Liz picked us up from Yards and we parked near Liberties where we would be going later to play quizzo. We walked around Northern Liberties for a little bit and decided to eat dinner at Gunners Run, which used to be Swift Half Pub and is located on the Piazza.  It was basically just bar food, but we all enjoyed what we got. When we finished up at dinner we headed down to Liberties to get some tables for quizzo. We had quite a group come out so we ended up breaking in to two teams and playing boys vs. girls. The boys won, but it was a close game.  We had a great time catching up with our Philly friends and playing quizzo like we used to when we lived down the street.
