Monday, July 11th

Today we slept in some, had breakfast and then got on our way. We planned on making a 4 hour drive to O'Neill, Nebraska. Of course on our way pretty early in to our drive a rock kicked up from a car driving on the opposite side of the road and cracked our windshield. The crack immediately began to spread and we knew that we would have to get the entire windshield replaced. You may remember that we just had this done on Thursday the 7th so this windshield is only 5 days old. We have been having some bad luck with our windshield recently. When we had phone service I was able to set up an appointment to get it fixed for tomorrow in Sioux City, Iowa. This took awhile because we were unable to locate a place in Nebraska on our route to set it up for. The lady on the phone kept making me look up zip codes for locations while I was talking to her. I was kind of annoyed because the only way for me to do this was to use the phone I was talking to her with when she had an entire computer sitting in front of her at her disposal.  I was literally looking through the atlas for cities she was naming to determine where they were. She was just naming random places in Nebraska. Luckily I said how about Sioux City since it is a larger city and probably has a place and after retrieving the zip code for her we were able to get something set up for tomorrow.

We continued on our way and when we had phone service I worked on looking up a place to spend the night. There weren’t any campgrounds in O’Neill, but I did find one in Atkinson, NE just west of O’Neill. We couldn’t really find any information about the campground besides where it was located. Jared decided that if it looked like crap we would continue driving until we found a better place.

Before getting to the campground in Atkinson, NE we drove through Valentine, NE.  While driving through we stopped to check out a brick mural.  The facade of the First National Bank holds the largest brick mural in Nebraska. It is 1200 square feet of images of longhorn cattle and the building of the transcontinental railroad. When Jared read about it ahed of time, he thought it was going to be a painted mural, but it was actually a mural created out of the brick work.  It was pretty cool, so we stopped to take a picture

Continuing on our way the next stop we made was in Ainsworth, NE. This town’s slogan is "Welcome to the Middle of Nowhere" and we would agree with that. We decided to stop though and eat some big burgers at Big John’s. The burgers were good, but nothing to crazy about them. We were due for a late lunch though so it worked out great.

After we finished our late lunch we moved on and finally reach the campground in Atkinson, NE. Unfortunately it looked horrible so we decided to continue on and I would search for another campground. Jared decided that even though he had been driving for 4 hours already he could go for the 3 more to make it to Sioux City, IA. That way we would be close for dropping the RV off tomorrow to get the work done. There weren’t too many campgrounds around Sioux City, but we were able to find a KOA north of Sioux City in South Dakota. They are considered the KOA campground for Sioux City and are about 8 miles out of the city. We drove in to Iowa from Nebraska briefly before jumping right back in to South Dakota for the campground. We got set up while getting eaten alive by mosquitos (apparently no one out here sprays for these buggers) and are now hanging out for the night.
