Friday, July 8th

Last night we saw some commercials for Deadwood, SD on tv and decided to change up our plans (we were originally going to head to Custer, SD) again and head to Deadwood today. This put us on another 4 hour drive, but we got up early and got on the road so we would make it to Deadwood in good time.

We got to the Deadwood KOA around 2:30pm, checked in and got settled in. While we were checking in the woman at the desk informed us that there is a free shuttle from the KOA to downtown Deadwood that runs every hour and the last pick up in Deadwood would be at midnight tonight. This was great news because we were going to bike or walk, but it would have been a super steep hill coming back to the campground later at night.

We tried to catch the 5pm shuttle, but walked down to pick it up at 5 and it was pulling out. Jared ran after it but the driver didn't see him. So we ended up heading back to the RV to wait for the 6pm shuttle. Time flew while we watch harry potter and waited. The 6pm shuttle dropped us off in Deadwood just as the 6pm gunfight show was getting started. We were able to head down the street a block and get some good spots to stand and watch the show. It was pretty fun and made it feel a little bit like the wild west.

After the shootout show ended we walked around Deadwood checking it out. We didn’t realize that it was full of casinos, but it definitely is. And if places aren’t casinos they seem to have at least one slot machine in their shop. There were tons of tourist stores and saloons. Because Deadwood is close to Sturgis and the Sturgis Rally is in a couple of weeks there were bikers everywhere and all sorts of Sturgis paraphernalia. Dad was hoping he would be able to meet up with us and go to Sturgis, but we will be back in the Philly area when the rally is so we will all be missing it.

While walking around we decided to stop in for a beer at the original location of Saloon No. 10, which is the actual location where Wild Bill Hickok was shot. After we finished up our beer we headed out on the street again to find someplace to eat. On our way down the street we caught another street show. This one consisted of Jack McCall running out of Saloon No. 10 right after shooting Wild Bill and him being arrested in the street. After watching the show we decided to eat at a steakhouse, but both got the bacon wrapped pork for dinner. It was ok. After finishing up dinner we headed in to the new Saloon No. 10 for a beer or two. When we finished up at the new Saloon No. 10 we went back to the spot of the original one because they told us early a band would be coming in. We were going to catch the 11pm shuttle back, but I wasn’t done my beer yet so we stayed to have another beer and catch the midnight shuttle. Right when we pulled in to the campground it started to rain so we made a dash for the RV and got in just before the heavy stuff started coming down. Then we went right to bed because we are getting up early tomorrow to head out.
