Tuesday, May 17th

We headed out from Morro Bay and jumped back on to 1 N.  We drove through some different small towns on our way to Big Sur.  They were pretty neat.  There wasn't much to do in them besides drive down main street to check out the little shops.  We contemplating going to Hearst Castle, which was the home of William Randolph Hearst.  Some of you might know him from this awesome quote "peddling the papers of Joseph Pulitzer, William Randolph Hearst, and other giants of the newspaper world."  At least I know my sisters will enjoy that line.  The tour of the castle cost like $25 per person so we decided to skip it. Jared tried to get a picture as we drove by. It is horrible, but I will post it anyway. Then you guys can see it the way we did.

We continued on our way on 1 N to drive the Big Sur Coast Highway. We saw a sign saying that the road was closed in 34 miles, but we decided to continue on. We figured that there would be a detour sign to take us around the part of the road that was closed. The drive was pretty awesome and pretty scary at the same time. It is super windy and up and down big hills. Also since it rained there were rocks in the road that I kept having to avoid. We ended up getting all the way to the road closed sign without ever having a chance to turn off the road. Apparently we should have done it 34 miles back. We ended up just having to turn around and head back out. It ended up adding tons of time to our trip because there was no quick way to get heading north again. The road was closed because there was a landslide.

So we ended up just making this a big day of driving. We did stop at some good turnouts on the coastal drive for some nice sights.  We decided to stay in Monterey so we would be close for our stuff tomorrow.
