Today the weather was a little cooler but still clear and dry - perfect for a day of walking. Portovenre is a beautiful fishing village close to tha naval port of La Spezia. Yuda, our guide drove us to the town of Riomaggiore, the first of a series of 5 villages on the Italian coast precariously built into the rocky hillside. Impossible to describe, the scenery is breathtaking (as is the hikes up the steep hills!). We walked the short hike from Riomaggiore to the next village of Corniglia. After a brief respite and time to enjoy the views we hopped on a train to the village of Vernazza, and then again on to the last village of Monterosso. This last village is not so precariously placed as the others and even has a beach. Andre and I shared a wonderful meal of  spagetti mare (spagetti with clams and mussels) as we looked out of the window across the Mediterranean sea. The setting could not have been more beautiful.

We made it back to Portovenre with enough time to explore the fortress here, which is something we love to do - climbing the battlements and imagining an invading party coming in to attack. We took a million pictures and felt exhilerated in the cold air. We also found the cemetry in the castle grounds built into the hillside - quite an amazing feat of construction. The sun is now set and soon we head off for a light dinner and maybe a bath to soak the tired feet.
