Flag of Italy  , Cinque terra,
Wednesday, November 7, 2012

After 4 different trains we are now at vernazza one of the 5hill side towns of cinque terra. This town was affected by flooding, landslides and buried under 4metres of mud in oct 2011. It also had further landslides killing a woman from Perth n sept this yr. now the coastal track has been closed....and we can see why. It is only a small town sitting on the edge of a hill, most houses are at least 4stories high, stairs, stairs, stairs to everything. It has a small harbour which has been affected by the high seas, rough weather n the past week. It is a town of no cars, a train line links all the towns together, vineyards...did I say stairs. We were a bit taken back on arrival as thought it would look different to what we saw. The water was not clear, bit murky from the weather, dirt beach, rubbish at shore line, walkways dusty looking, houses paint peeling, then we heard about what happened one yr ago. Found a place to stay up a small alley, unsure which floor we are on but long way up to carry bags, marble stairs, tiny steep staircases leading to a glass door with flowers on it, how italian. Up more steep stairs to small sitting room. The bedroom has a balcony and shutter doors lead to a very steep metal stairway up to a terrace with a glimpse of the sea. sunset on the fort, drinks by the Small harbour. Dinner tonight was the best we have had. Risotto with mixed seafood straight from the wood oven. White wine from area as well. We are enjoying the feel of Italian seaside towns.
