During our two-week winter break, we decided to forego returning to Canada in favour of a vacation with some of our friends here. So we booked a 4-day ski trip to Shiga Kogen in Nagano prefecture, the biggest ski resort in the country and the main site for the downhill ski events at the 1998 Olympics. In addition to its 21 lifts and over 72 ski runs, Shiga Kogen is known for the local monkeys, who enjoy bathing in the hot spring baths. Being a colder-than-average winter, we enjoyed almost three metres' worth of snow, which covered the trees in a lovely powder and softened the blow for falling down.
