A short stop over in Puno to see the Floating Islands, Uros in Lake Titicata.

Got down to the dock early and paid Roberta to take us to the floating islands before dropping us off on Amantani Islands where we would spend the night at a homestay.

The floating islands of Uros are made up totora reeds that grow in the shallow lake. The reeds are also interwoven to make houses, boats and crafts. The reeds are constantly replenished as they rot away. Walking on the reeds is really weird as they feel quite mushy under your feet.

Amantani is a four hour boat ride, so most of us decided that a long nap was required. Upon reaching Amantani, we get to meet our hosts. Roberta had other ideas and tried to get us to stay at his homestay. I was not impressed. So went back to the dock to ask the ladies there if they had a room.

Sophia had the perfect homestay. In the village, surrounded by sheep, children jumping about and the husband was outside ploughing. I quickly changed rooms for the night but did not tell Roberta who I would be staying with. Apparently this could cause mayhem on such a small island.

Felt a bit like Santa arriving on the island as between myself and Dave ( another traveller ) we brought with us rice, pasta, oats, flour and a whole chicken. For the kids we bought some bouncing balls and some colouring in books with crayons. THe balls were a huge hit.

Watching three wives dividing our purchases between three families was quite precious. Even the tin of fruit got divided. We were well liked after that.

For the afternoon we walked up to Pachamama. Sacred part of the mountain. The altitude always gives me a hard time. So its a slow process to climb yet another steep hill.
