Where I stayed
What I did
walked around Girona; drove to Costa Brava - Begur & surrounds; found hotel on coast south of Begur
On the spur of the moment we decided to catch a train from BCN to Girona and (maybe) head over to the Costa Brava for a night.
Packed a toothbrush each and a spare pair of undies each, just in case!
Train ride was interrupted when someone suicided further up the line - we had no idea why the train stopped when the announcement came over in Spanish - luckily a young guy sitting near us was able to translate..... waited an hour then train started up again and we arrived in Girona.
After a coffee and visit to the tourist info office, map in hand, we did the walk around the old town of Girona... it was very pretty. Found an amazing "sweets" shop on the way in one of the little lanes, the beautiful cathedral and walked the wall... all very picturesque.
Everything was so lovely we decided to hire a car and explore a little of the Costa Brava, but this time with a GPS!!!! (thanks Garret & Blair Dixon for this advice!)
No hire car offices were open in Girona, so we caught the bus to the Girona airport to try our luck there.... first hire car office didn't have what we asked for so at no extra charge offered us an upgrade to an automatic Mercedes Benz.. sigh... ok.
With GPS programmed for "Begur" off we headed. The countryside was gorgeous all the way, very fertile greens, beautiful mountains and amazing coastline. Our first glimpse of Begur took the breath away!
It was getting quite late at this stage so we started looking for a hotel for the night - this proved easier said than done! It was a long weekend in Spain, unbeknowns to us, and many hotels were booked out. After a drive back to some smaller towns outside of Begur, we found a very helpful hotelier who recommended we go to Calella de Palafrugell, on the coast and south of Begur where there were "lots of hotels". Fortunately she was right!
The first one we found, Hotel Garbi, had a room & was very nice. We did however encounter a small challenge actually getting our booking accepted because I didn't bring our passports.... got over that hurdle (they accepted our WA drivers licences) and we were in!
Didn't need to change for dinner (didn't have any spare clothes!!!!). Had a lovely dinner in their dining room, the hero being a wonderful duck ham salad and a lovely little chardonnay! Rich had goat and i had duck for mains.... all good.
