We arrived back in the UK from our last trip at the end of April 2012 to find the country awash with red, white and blue as the populace eagerly anticipated a summer of British pomp, splendour and sporting achievement. No sooner were the celebrations for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee over and done with than excitement started to mount once more, this time for the London Olympic Games.

Up north however we distanced ourselves, to a degree, from the enthusiasm in the capital, only matching our southern neighbours' exuberance when Manchester City finished the season in dramatic style and won the English Premier League.

We will probably remember the summer most though for the unrelenting dismal weather. Despite the adverse conditions, I stubbornly stuck to my routine of daily outdoor exercise, plodding along constantly muddy footpaths accompanied more often than not by the sound of raindrops hammering onto the hood of my waterproof jacket.  So depressing was the UK weather that we took the unprecedented step of booking a summer holiday and, in September, enjoyed 14 days of unbroken sunshine on Turkey's Mediterranean coast.

Now it's time to set off once more on our winter adventure.   South East Asia is a region that we have visited on a number of occasions previously and have always thoroughly enjoyed.  Apart from booking a return flight to Kuala Lumpur, organising a couple of visas and picking up a large supply of anti-malarial tablets, preparations have been minimal.  For the first time ever we don't even know where we are going to be for Christmas.

What has been decided upon though is that, after a day to thaw out in sultry Kuala Lumpur, we will travel to Yunnan province in China, an area that we don't know but are looking forward to exploring before the winter snows hit the mountainous western parts of the province in December.
