We left Koh Lanta this morning to head for Ao Nang which is on the mainland about 20 kilometres north of Krabi. We really would have preferred to stay at Railay Beach instead of Ao Nang, which is nearby and looks amazing but it was way out of our budget. Thankfully, Railay is only a short longtail boat ride away which costs about 80 baht each, so staying Ao Nang shouldn't be too bad. We have read that Ao Nang isn’t terribly nice - admittedly it’s a lot busier and more touristy than Koh Lanta, but nowhere near as busy as Phi-Phi. The beach looks okay, although at high tide it looks like there isn’t likely to be much sand left as it comes up so high.
We’re staying in quite a nice hotel called the White Sands. It’s not on the beach but then on our budget there are some things we can’t afford. When we arrived we went for a wander- the shopping looks quite good here and we found an Irish pub where we stopped for a beer and some lunch.
We’d just got back to our hotel after lunch when we were surprised to see some rain over the hills. Here we are in plus 30 degrees heat, we haven’t seen a rain cloud since we left London and it absolutely dumped down for about half an hour. In some ways it was a small welcome relief as it did cool the air down a little. The rain didn’t last for long although it did return again about 2 hours later when it rained in a massive deluge for about 20 minutes - it almost caught James out as he was sitting by the pool reading and didn’t see it approaching until it was almost upon him.
During our walk at lunch time we spotted quite a good looking Indian restaurant which we went back to for dinner. We like Thai food but we were keen for a proper curry after not having had one for awhile. The food was good but not cheap and the beer was very expensive – unfortunately that’s blown the budget for the day! We’re noticing that everything here is more expensive than Lanta or even Phi Phi. We can’t really understand why as we’re on the mainland now but there is a captive audience of tourists here and lots of families which may be why.
