Tina texted this morning to say she was going to meet us at Long Beach and do the last 2 days cycle with us, made a call to the Days Inn but they had no extra rooms, asked which was the closest hotel to them and they said Motel 6 - rang & got her a room, glad she decided to come.
Had a coffee in the room (no breakfast at this hotel) and set out around 9.30, the nice boy at reception told us to go to Paradise Cove Beach Cafe for a good breakfast. It took us forever to get to the 1 and as usual we met a nice guy who told us which way to go & wanted to talk forever. Anyway up some steep hills and eventually found it, then as we were cycling along there was the board for the Cafe off to our right, down a steep road to the beach & we're there. Gorgeous setting right on the beach & a good scrambled egg with potatoes for me & omelette for Peter. Back up the steep hill and it seems Malibu goes on forever, we take a side road for a while & the houses were just amazing, right on the beach & huge but all so different - mostly modern styles but all really unusual - they look like they belong on those architectural shows. Then back on the 1 and into Santa Monica, I've never seen such a massive beach, not just long (although it goes on & on) it's so wide too - you can't even see the ocean there's so much sand in front of you. There's a great cycle path all along & then it runs into Venice beach and then muscle beach still on the path, there's loads going on everywhere but so many homeless with all their belongings - I say homeless but mostly they're young people so maybe they just like living on the beach. Really funny as one guy was eating his food there were seagulls on the beach right next to him, I'm sure they were probably going to take the food out of his hand. Still following TomTom and things start to get hairy, lots more traffic so we cycle on the pavement but then we're actually at Los Angeles airport with no idea what way to go. TomTom wants us to go straight but we can see its a long tunnel which doesn't look good then we see a group of motorcycle cops so Peter asks them of we can have an escort through the tunnel. We ask them which way to Long Beach, one tells us to turn back & circle around but another says no the tunnels fine there's a sidewalk. Ok so we go down to the tunnel, Peters ahead & doesn't see the big sign that says no cycles or pedestrians - thanks officer! It was so scary, it was at least half mile with a narrow pavement to push the bikes on with cars non stop rushing past, unbelievable. Eventually out, on & on this is exhausting especially as there's so much traffic, it's hard cycling on the pavement too as you have to keep waiting for the light at the crossings but it's too scary on the road. Finally get to Long Beach but we're in a really a scruffy road, not at all what you expect Long Beach to look like at all but the hotels were all booked & the ones at the beach were over $200 a night. The Days Inn is actually fine but when we go down to meet Teen at hers it looks pretty rough, asked the receptionist where we can eat & she says Subway's over the road! We got a cab downtown & had a nice meal, Teen sushi, us steak& scallops then back to the rough part.
