Left Adobe Inn at 9am after a pretty bad continental breakfast and TomTom took us straight to all the bad hills as usual. Took around an hour with lots of walking to find route one, not a good start.
Almost immediately to the 17 mile drive road to Carmel, it's a $10 dollar toll road but the guy didn't charge us! It's really beautiful with wonderful houses, the waves were pretty huge too. Great empty beach with lots of walkers, didn't see Clint though.
Back up to route one and it's not very busy and has a shoulder (not exactly a bike lane) to ride on but soon the hills start. Their not too steep just long and lots of them, started to get hot though so behind a bush to change into shorts & put on sunblock. Wonderful views all along making us stop a lot for photos, it's really weird when in places the mist rolls in off the ocean even needing the back lights on at one point. Then heaven, a long downhill into Big Sur, it's not really what you expect, it's in the redwood forests and not on cliffs as you'd think. Our motel River Inn is fine, we booked the stay & dine for $160 (rooms here are $130 & no hairdryer!) which seemed a good deal but the dinner wasn't great & with wine came to $99 and our dinner voucher was for $90! Oh well there's just nowhere around here to stay as they don't allow development so we'd no choice. We met a nice boy who'd cycled from Oregon and was also going to San Diego, he was camping and also going for a 20odd mile hike tonight, he was very handsome but very Californian though he kept talking about detoxing & eating seaweed to another boy that was there. We were hoping only to go 30 miles tomorrow which was the closest motel but it's closed for 2 weeks so we have to go 40 miles to Gorda and we know from blogs that it's going to be the hardest day, really steep so think we'd better have an early start with a late finish I'm sure. Haven't said yet how nice everybody here in California is so if we get in trouble tomorrow I'm sure a nice pick up driver will help! Peter keeps saying he can't keep up with me, might be the extra stuff he's carrying or his extra weight. It's been nice sitting around the fire in the bar writing this but asked to leave, it's only 9.30! Ok back to our cabin, no TV here lucky I guess that there's wifi.
