July 07, 2007 - Going home - We got up at 4:30am and blearily got dressed, made our breakfast, which was actually something different, pineapple. Woo! Katy got up and put that out for us and Gerardo called us a cab. At 5:10 the cab showed and Katy and Gerardo walked us out, hugged us and said goodbyes. The cab cost us 30pesos because we're gringos. It took us to the Pullman Casino de la Selva. We got our tickets and boarded our bus. We pulled out at 5:30am and were served drinks. I got a bottle of water and we also had our agua grande bottle from Teotihuacan that we've taken with us everywhere since then. We arrived at Benito Juarez Aeropuerto at 6:30. We found our baggage check-in which was packed. But that was ok because our flight didn't leave till 9:50. There were two car wrecks on our way to Mexico City. One car was smashed in the front, but by itself and another car was upside-down and also without any other cars around. Interesting. Anyway, we got some starbucks en espanol to give us a wakeup. We looked at some magazines and books at a store and changed our money back. Our 9:50 flight boarded at 11:15am, a little late. We landed in Denver at 2:00pm mountain time, Mexico City is on Central time so an hour ahead of Denver. We got off and got through customs very quick and were second to the baggage claim. From here we picked up our dog at Playful Pooch USA and went home to reflect on our eye-opening volunteer trip.
This trip, despite our initial concerns, was a great experience for the both of us. We saw and lived in a part of Mexico that most Americans will not experience. We got to see the real Mexico and experience some things that will remain with us always. Hopefully we'll be able to get out on another volunteer, Patas de Perro trip sometime soon.
