I awoke to the sun burning brightly, a freshness brought by the rain, and a fantastic view looking out to the sea through dense thickets of corkscrew palms.
Bentota offers a clutch of package resorts, and comprises a wide swathe of sand making it one of the most attractive beaches on the island (according to my Rough Guide book).  Despite the number of visitors, Bentota beach remains surprisingly quiet.  There's no beachlife here, and the oceanfront lacks even the modest smattering of impromptu café's, handicraft shops and hawkers found at nearby Beruwala (Bear-rular).
Still, the immaculate gardens, undisturbed pool, high temperature, and carefree feeling were certainly all there to be enjoyed.  At 2.30pm I realised I'd usually just be arriving into the office from a packed tube back home in wintry London, and promptly ordered a deeply satisfying beer - cheers!
Not every sight was as welcoming (check out the German in his posing pouch!) or every sound (squirrels provided a constant chatter from high in the palms), but even the inevitable sun-burnt red knees could spoil the idyllic setting.  An evening firework display  in honour of a German couple married in the grounds earlier that day capped a good day.
