Well, we are finally back home and my god is it cold here! Went from 38 degrees in Bangkok to 8 degrees in London. Not fun. Life back home seems not to have changed at all which is weird - feels like we never went away! I have to keep looking at all the photos to remind myself of the amazing times we've had over the last five months.
After our mission to the Cambodian border, we night bussed it back down to Surat Thani, and then got the ferry across to Koh Samui. We decided to stay in Mae Nam again, as we really liked it the first time, plus Jamie's family were back in the villa so it was near them. We found a bargain little villa at Triple S travel agents for £11 a night - had a lounge with cable tv, little kitchenette so we could cook most of our meals, bedroom with air con and bathroom with hot water. And only 2 minutes walk to the beach! Perfect!
As we didn't have much money, we didn't really do much for the ten days we were there apart from laze on the beach. As it was getting to the start of the rainy season we had a couple of showers - of course one was the day we decided to venture over to Chaweng beach! After half an hour hanging off the back of the bus we then walked for half an hour in the blistering heat trying to find the beach, then about ten minutes after we had laid our towels down a load of black clouds came over and it started to pour with rain! Charming. Chaweng beach was really nice, but I'm glad we didn't stay there as it's soo touristy and westernised. Mae Nam seemed to have more of a village atmosphere, and was much more relaxed.
Olwen did a fantastic BBQ up at the villa one night - don't think me and J had eaten that much in months! Hot dogs, chicken kebabs, pasta salad, garlic bread, potato salad - all washed down with many a glass of wine (the first wine I had drunk since Australia!).
We headed back up to Bangkok two days before we were due to fly out and booked into Rambuttri Village Inn - looovely hotel on Soi Rambuttri (with rooftop pool, obviously). Sadly we had a thunderstorm on our last day so sunbathing was out of the question! Still had a nice swim though.
The day of our flight we just mooched about really, definitely spent far too much time around Khao San Road - wouldn't mind if I never saw that place again! Was a strange feeling, we were happy to finally be going home as we had had enough of the whole backpacking lifestyle (night buses, squat toilets, packing and repacking the backpack every other day), but at the same time I didn't want the trip to end. I'd planned it for so long, it's hard to believe that it's all over now :-(.
Flight was uneventful, only slept for about 3 hours so was a bit of a zombie when we got home, but other than that it was fine. And now I'm sat in my room, still surrounded by all the stuff that was in my bag as I haven't quite got round to putting it all away!
Very sad to be spending my days writing covering letters and applying for a million jobs (mostly unpaid!) rather than going to beautiful beaches, wandering round crumbling temples or enjoying a few glasses of goon with dorm friends. The post-backpacking blues have well and truly arrived!
So I guess the next blog I write will be when I next head off on an exciting adventure (with my financial situation that could be a good few years!) but I'll keep you posted! Hope everyone's enjoyed reading the blog, and get in touch if you're heading off and want any advice!
